Ecstatic, for starters, simply to have posted a winning record, the Queens faithful urgently reached for the unthinkable as the fall of 1969 unfolded. Having split the first two World Series games in Baltimore, the Mets headed back to Shea to play in front of spectators who collectively never believed they’d see the day. But there they were, about to sweep the Birds three straight and win the Fall Classic without returning to Baltimore. In anticipation of that homecoming, New York’s Daily News published its first-ever color front page on the morning of Game 3. The historic publication has been autographed by (29) members of that “Miracle” roster. Framed to 17x21”, the October 14, 1969 front page features a color illustration of a father/son team heading to the ballpark in jubilant support of their Mets. The bold-type headline reads “SHEADOWN!: with a sub-heading of: “Gil: Fans Our Secret Weapon.” In fiber tip marker, Mets’ signatures average (“9-10”) potency and include: Agee, Berra (coach), Boswell, Cardwell, Charles, Clendenon, DiLauro, Garrett, Gaspar, Gentry, Grote, Harrelson (“6” strength), Jones, Kiner (announcer), Koonce (d.1993), Koosman, Kranepool, Martin, McAndrew, McGraw, B. Murphy (announcer), Pignatano (coach), Ryan, Seaver, Shamsky, Swoboda, Taylor, Weis and Yost (coach). Matted just below is a cut signature from Hodges (manager, d.1972, “10” strength). Accompanying is a full photo LOA from JSA.
