The newest fad in sports media, Sports Illustrated hit the shelves in 1954 and caught the attention of millions with color photography and weekly minutia regarding a wide variety of sporting activities. Appropriately, the inaugural issue's front cover portrayed perhaps the biggest new craze in American sports: the Milwaukee Braves. This particular example showcases a bold signature from cover subject Eddie Mathews. who has added telling inscriptions revealing his career feats. Transplanted from Boston, where the franchise struggled for decades, the Milwaukee Braves quickly caught fire - on the field and at the turnstiles, pacing the Majors in attendance for each of their first six seasons. And so there he was for all to see: Eddie Mathews completing his powerful swing during a night game at Milwaukee's County Stadium. A prized publication in its own right, this one is autographed by Mathews. Executed in gold-colored marker, Mathews' scripting projects ("10") strength and clarity and is accompanied by his inscriptions of "512 HRs - HOF '78." With covers, crisp pages and the tri-fold Topps Baseball card insert intact, the volume presents (EX) with minor cover wear. Comes with a full photo LOA from JSA.
