Doomed for relocation at their outdated Atlanta Omni venue, the Atlanta Flames moved north of the border following the 1979-80 season, as sparse attendance plagued the franchise despite six playoff appearances in eight seasons. In terms of vintage NHL apparel, it doesn’t get much better than this! This Atlanta Flames road sweater was worn by gritty defenceman Phil Russell during his two-season tenure (1978/79-1979/80) with the club. During a career in which he logged better than 2,000 penalty minutes, Russell wore this red mesh pullover garment with the fire-themed “A” logo displayed on the front in white-on-yellow applique, while “3” appears on the back and long sleeves in like fashion. Just atop the back number, “RUSSELL” is sewn to a nameplate in white-on-yellow twill. Red-yellow-and-white striped stretch ribbed knit lines the V-neck, while like-colored applique patterns adorn the sleeves and waistline. Within the collar, a “REEDER & McGAUGHEY” local distributor’s label is sewn atop a “Russell Athletic” size “XL” tag. Outstanding game wear is evident with board, stick and paint transfer marks throughout. Within the rear tail, the fight strap remains intact.
