The older sibling of a tandem that helped the Pittsburgh Pirates to the 1927 National League flag, Paul Waner was actually smaller in stature than brother Lloyd but nonetheless given the “Big Poison” moniker by a fear-stricken Brooklyn fan. The Hall of Famer and three-time National League batting champion has autographed this baseball. Graded 8 by PSA/DNA, this Philadelphia Phillies souvenir sphere is a rarity in the realm of single-signed orbs. The clean and creamy unofficial keepsake is signed on a side panel in blue ballpoint. Preceded by a personalization and “Best Wishes” salutation, Waner’s potent scripting is followed by his inscription of “4/13/60.” While he never played for the Phillies, Waner did take a position as a hitting coach for the club in 1965, but died from emphysema before the season ended. This item has a reserve (estimated value: $6,500 - $8,500).
