The possibilities regarding when, why and how these signatures were gathered are endless. The certainty in the matter is that an ardent fan had a keen eye for legends! The medium is a an “Official Partridge League” orb with age-induced toning and a series of surface abrasions (likely incurred during diamond use). Steel tip fountain pen scriptings vary in terms of strength and clarity. The sweet spot is reserved for none other than Babe Ruth. The absence of quotation marks around “Babe” date the signature to post-1928. With strong pen pressure on the upper-case “B” and somewhat less on the “R,” Ruth’s penning registers (“5-6”) potency. On the adjacent (west) panel, we behold the endorsement of Lou Gehrig (“6” strength), which is respectively flanked above and below by former Indians right fielder Dick Porter (“4” strength) and former Cubs infielder Bill Jurges (“2-3” strength). Atop the south panel, an unidentified signature is followed by the pennings of Tony Lazzeri (“3-4” strength) and former Pittsburgh infielder Bill Brubaker (“4” strength). The north panel is decorated with what appears to be the scripting of former Phillies infielder Eddie Delker (“4” strength). On the east panel, an unidentified autograph precedes a handwritten notation of “AUG 1934.” Again, it is unclear as to why and when players from scattered franchises were asked to sign, but the presence of Ruth, Gehrig and Lazzeri makes this a priceless pinstriper heirloom and cornerstone to any collection.
