The NFL’s all-time leading rusher at the time of his retirement, Walter Payton was dubbed “Sweetness” for several reasons. The origin of the name reportedly stems from his soft, high-pitched voice. But as he lay bedridden with liver cancer and his days numbered, Payton defined “Sweetness,” autographing hundreds of lithographs, knowing that the proceeds would go to the Walter Payton Foundation for needy children. Here is one such keepsake. Composed by British artist Stephen Doig just months before Payton’s 1999 passing, the limited edition (1988/2434) print is matted and shrink-wrapped to dimensions of 22x28”. Titled “Whatever It Takes,” the print features a collage of likenesses, most of which portray Payton in action with the center image showing Payton during one of his punishing workouts. Along the lower border, Payton has signed in black marker (“9” strength). COA from BTI Sports Ventures and The Walter Payton Foundation.
