Description

Over a 13-year career, infielder Bill Wambsganss amassed 1,359 hits, twice led the circuit in sacrifices and, of course, turned an unassisted triple play in the 1920 World Series. Well after his career, he lamented that the single Fall Classic play was all anyone seemed to remember. “You’d think I was born on the day before and died on the day after,” he said. Commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Indians’ first-ever World Series title, Gateway Silk cachets, too, seems to have only remembered Wambsganss for that triple play! Postmarked “OCT 12 1985,” the souvenir features a photo and text detailing Wambsganss’ defensive gem. Always a good sport, Cleveland native Wambsganss signed in red marker (just two months before he passed away). The bold penning projects (“10”) strength and clarity. JSA cert/sticker
